Geoffrey Wilson who, as GEW, has written the Camera Club column in the Prestwich and Whitefield Guide for many years, has died age 86.
He was taken ill on Wednesday 14th March and admitted to Fairfield Hospital where he suffered a subdural hematoma and died peacefully the following Monday.
He was born and educated in Blackburn and joined the army at the age of 15 on Boys Service. He spent the war in the UK and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. It was while he was stationed in Bury he met his wife Joan. They were married in 1943 in Radcliffe Parish Church. In 1945 with their first baby on the way and the war all but over, he was posted abroad to the remote island of St Helena for 18 months as an instrument technician .
In 1949 he completed a course in teacher training at Drake Hall in Stafford
. He began his teaching career at Whitefield County Secondary School and stayed for 33 years. As Mr. “Tug” Wilson, he not only taught science, but was fully involved in school life including refereeing football matches, arranging film shows on wet dinnertimes, looking after lost property, organizing school trips and helping out with stage productions. On one famous occasion he stepped in to play the part of Pooh Bar in the Mikado at the last minute when the pupil concerned broke his leg.
He was well known for his Reliant car and became a prominent member of the Manchester branch of the Reliant Owners Club, editing their monthly magazine “Top Gear” for many years.
Following his retirement in 1984, Geoff devoted more time to traveling and hobbies such as photography, reading crosswords and latterly computing and became an active member of Probus, Emeritus and the Camera Club. .
He is survived by Joan, his wife of 63 years and their two children, six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was a methodical man, dependable and dedicated and devoted to his family and will be sadly missed.
